Lake Wylie residents have received varying updates this month regarding the condition of their local swimming areas. A swim advisory, previously issued for parts of the lake due to harmful algae blooms (HABs), has seen fluctuating statuses as conditions in the coves shift. The most recent advisory, affecting Boyd's Cove and Snug Harbor Cove on Lower Lake Wylie, remains in effect due to ongoing observations of active harmful algae blooms, as reported by Mecklenburg County.
While the advisory has been lifted in some areas, it highlights the ongoing challenge posed by cyanobacteria, a toxin-producing algae that can be harmful to both humans and animals if ingested. Since the bloom was first detected on August 15, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services has continued to caution residents and pets against contact with water in the affected areas, with similar warnings issued last Friday and on Tuesday.
These cyanobacteria, responsible for the potentially toxic blooms, have been linked to severe illness through ingestion. The local Storm Water Services staff conducting routine monitoring efforts confirmed the presence of these unwanted blooms, spurring advisories urging residents to refrain from swimming, boating, fishing, and other waterfront activities, with particular caution advised for pets and small children. The guidance offered by the services includes washing thoroughly after contact and seeking immediate care for any illness onset post-exposure, as mentioned on their advisory updates.
