A 15-year-old girl is currently in critical condition following a near-drowning incident at Carre-Hogle Park in Racine. The Racine County Sheriff's Office reported that the teen was rescued from the choppy waters of Lake Michigan last night, July 31. Emergency services responded to a distress call around 6:20 p.m. after receiving numerous reports of a girl struggling to stay afloat roughly 20-30 feet from the shoreline, as confirmed by WTMJ and TMJ4.
Upon reaching the scene, the Racine Fire Department and the Sheriff Boat Patrol collaborated, finding the teen not breathing and initiating life-saving procedures. "The girl was eventually located approximately 20 feet from shore," the Racine Fire Department said, further detailing that swift winds and significant waves exacerbated the challenge of the rescue. The information was provided by FOX6 News. Acknowledged for their proficiency by the sheriff’s office, the rescuers managed to successfully retrieve her from the water's unforgiving clutches.
The girl regained a pulse and was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a Milwaukee area hospital in critical condition. Authorities have ruled out any foul play in this incident. The lake's condition at the time of the incident were far from ideal, with "20-25mph sustained winds, 3-foot waves in the lagoon area and visible rip currents," as noted by the sheriff’s office in a statement obtained by WTMJ.
Despite posted warnings, the incident unfolded, highlighting the dangers of swimming in adverse conditions. "It appears the juveniles unfortunately ignored the warning signs and were quickly overwhelmed by the current," the Racine Fire Department reported, as a friend of the victim was also momentarily pulled under in an attempt to assist, according to TMJ4. The teenage girl's name has not been released, and updates on her condition will be followed by the community with heavy hearts, wishing for her recovery.
