
A solemn air hangs over the Temple Police Department following the off-duty drowning of Officer Toalua "Charlie" Aumua in Belton Lake. According to CBS Austin, the tragedy occurred on Friday, and a 911 call was placed around 10:48 a.m. Officer Aumua, highly respected within the force, was spending time with family at the Freedom Boat Club when the incident took place.
Recovery efforts lasted through Saturday morning, with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office Dive Team finding Officer Aumua's body at approximately 9:45 a.m. Assigned to Day Shift Patrol, Toalua "Charlie" Aumua had served with the Temple Police Department since August 2020, also being a field trainer and a member of the Temple SWAT team. Officer Aumua has received numerous accolades over his career, including being honored as the Recruit Officer of the Year in 2021 and being named Temple Police Officer of the Year in 2023. Temple Police Chief Shawn Reynolds told CBS Austin, "Charlie was not only an excellent police officer, perhaps more importantly, he was a good person and a good man."
11Alive reported that the Texas Game Wardens, involved in the search for Aumua, extended their sympathies to the bereaved family and the law enforcement community. "While we know nothing can ease the pain of this loss, we hope being able to bring Officer Aumua home provides a small measure of comfort and closure during this difficult time," the statement read.
The loss of Officer Aumua has been deeply felt across the law enforcement community, with various departments offering condolences. Defined by his faith and commitment to service, Officer Aumua earned two life-saving awards in 2023 in addition to the other commendations. Rendering support services available to the officer's family and department personnel, details around funeral arrangements have not been disclosed, according to 11Alive.
