In a joint collaboration, the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Arkansas Department of Transportation have inaugurated a new name for the Interstate 55 (I-55) bridge, deeming it Kings' Crossing. This designation celebrates the influence of three cultural icons—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., B.B. King, and Elvis Presley—and seeks to blend infrastructure with regional identity.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation's announcement, the Tennessee General Assembly and the Arkansas Highway Commission ratified the name, which stands as a tribute to these figures’ impacts on civil rights, music, and cultural integration. Celebrating the cross-state collaboration, TDOT Commissioner Will Reid stated, "Kings’ Crossing is more than just a piece of infrastructure; it is a symbol of our collective history, heritage, and the enduring spirit of unity that defines this region." Meanwhile, ARDOT Director Jared Wiley, praising the partnership, expressed his pride, saying, "It's only fitting to name this vital crossing after three historic figures from this region."

The infrastructure project symbolized by Kings' Crossing is a titan of regional progress, buoyed by a nearly $400 million RAISE program effort from the U.S. Department of Transportation. With each state’s transportation department pledging up to $200 million, the initiative reflects a historic financial commitment to replace the aging 75-year-old bridge with a new construct that satisfies modern seismic standards, sitting on the vigilant New Madrid fault line. From improving safety to enhancing commercial traffic flow, the new bridge aims to solidify the economic backbone of both Tennessee and Arkansas.

Set to take off with construction in fiscal year 2026, the project is aligning its strategy toward finalizing design and proceeding with Right-of-Way coordination later this year. “The environmental process is wrapping up on the I-55 Bridge Replacement project. Design is underway, and Right-of-Way coordination should begin later this year,” revealed the TDOT statement. The project will use the CM/GC delivery method, known for managing complex designs and technical challenges.
