A Texas man has been sentenced to federal prison for producing artificial intelligence-generated child sexual abuse images. Daniel Weatherly, 42, of Brownwood, Texas, will serve two years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, during which he is prohibited from having contact with minors.

U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber oversaw the case, and the conviction came after Weatherly pleaded guilty on January 8. Court documents revealed that Weatherly had utilized a cellphone app designed to craft high-quality images from simple text prompts. Using this technology, Weatherly specified and produced explicit material involving children, with the age ranges cited as between five and eight years old.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI conducted the investigation into Weatherly's activities, receiving notable support from the North Port Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Erin Claire Favorit and Abigail K. King led the prosecution as part of Project Safe Childhood—a comprehensive DOJ initiative targeting child exploitation and abuse since 2006.

The use of AI in these crimes represents a new area of cybercrime, and this case establishes a legal reference for similar offenses. The sentencing reflects law enforcement’s role in addressing emerging technologies. For more information on Project Safe Childhood and its initiatives, visit the DOJ’s official website.
