The package, left behind by an unidentified individual who quickly left the scene, led to the deployment of the NYPD Bomb Squad as part of the investigation.
During the response, streets were closed and the public was directed away from the area, altering the usual pedestrian flow through Times Square. CBS News New York reported, "Chopper 2 flew overhead, where the NYPD Bomb Squad could be seen blocking off streets, as people were asked to avoid the area." The evacuation and investigation resulted in travel disruptions, with traffic delays continuing after the all-clear was issued.
The police response followed established security protocols in New York City, with units deployed quickly upon receiving the report. Fox 5 New York described the scene, stating, "The Emergency Service Unit and bomb squad responded, and pedestrian zones in the area were frozen as a precaution."
By 11:53 a.m., law enforcement confirmed that the package was not a threat and the situation was resolved. "As of 11:53 a.m., officials confirmed the item was not dangerous," Fox 5 New York reported. Normal operations in Times Square, including theaters, vendors, and pedestrian activity, resumed following the conclusion of the investigation.
The investigation into the package has been completed, streets have been reopened, and the individual who left the object has not yet been located.
