The Twin Cities area is bracing for a sweltering day ahead, with a Heat Advisory in full effect from noon until 9 PM CDT this evening, as stated by the National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen, MN. Residents of Hennepin, Anoka, Ramsey, Washington, Carver, Scott, and Dakota Counties can expect heat index values to hover between 98 and 103 degrees. The NWS urges the public to drink plenty of fluids, seek out air-conditioned spaces, avoid the sun, and monitor the well-being of others.
Adding to the heat, hazardous weather conditions are anticipated for the region. A line of thunderstorms with potential for gusty winds is expected to push into northwest Minnesota early this morning, likely affecting areas as far south as central Minnesota. Tonight, Minneapolitans will have a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms, particularly between 2 and 4 AM, according to the National Weather Service. New rainfall amounts could range between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
The weather outlook for the coming days indicates a possibility of lingering thunderstorms early Saturday, but things should clear up into the next week. Skies are predicted to be mostly sunny from Sunday to Wednesday, with highs consistently reaching the mid to high 80s. By nightfall, temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-to-upper 60s, providing a modest reprieve from the day's heat.
With the heat advisory underway, the National Weather Service has provided preventive actions, including the recommendation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration that outdoor workers schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. "Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1," the NWS warns, underlining the seriousness of the weather's impact. SKYWARN spotter activation may be necessary during severe weather, emphasizing just how closely meteorological changes are being watched in the area.
