Yesterday morning, a seven-vehicle accident on the Bronx River Parkway tragically ended the lives of two young men, according to reports from local authorities. The collision, which took place around 12:30 a.m., involved a mix of mopeds and cars, resulting in a significant shutdown of the southbound lanes near East Gun Hill Road in Olinville. The impact of the crash was severe enough to eject two moped riders from their vehicles, both of whom were later pronounced dead at a hospital, as noted by ABC7NY.
Mauricio Neyra Yuyes, a 21-year-old from White Plains, has been taken into custody following the catastrophic incident, with charges that include vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated (DWI). Additional charges of driving while ability impaired were further applied to Neyra Yuyes, who police allege was operating a 2019 Mercedes Benz on the highway at the time of the accident. Officials claim he tried to haphazardly pass another car before striking two motorcycles, leading to the fatal outcome. These details were provided by Gothamist.
The aftermath of the crash saw a temporary closure of the parkway, disrupting early morning traffic and initiating an investigation into the causes behind the tragedy. The victims of this horrific event were later identified as Bronx residents Enrique Martinez, 21, and Manuel Amarantepenalo, 19. Meanwhile, the driver of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI, which was also involved, refused medical attention at the scene.
Neyra Yuyes was arrested around 8:30 a.m. yesterday, with his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court pending for the following day. His legal representation was not immediately known.
