The U.S. Mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recently welcomed Chuka Asike as the new Deputy Chief of Mission. According to ASEAN, Asike, a career Foreign Service Officer, began his assignment this month, bringing extensive experience from various assignments worldwide.

Asike's prior role as the Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Fukuoka, Japan placed him at the vortex of diplomatic relations in southwest Japan, including engagement with two strategic U.S. military bases. This experience is expected to critically inform his new duties in Southeast Asia, allowing him to swiftly adapt and to navigate the geopolitical intricacies of the ASEAN nations. His tenure in Fukuoka spanned from June 2022 through June of this year and ended just before his current appointment.

Prior to his assignment in Japan, Asike served as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Development Results and Accountability. During his year there, he developed expertise in U.S. policies concerning multilateral development bank projects in Asia and Africa. His career has included various strategic roles in finance and economics, focusing on advancing U.S. interests in global development finance.

In Washington DC, he also served as the Department’s principal liaison to the Asian Development Bank and was later seconded to the World Bank’s Office of the U.S. Executive Director. These roles have enabled Asike to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interactions and challenges among global finance, development, and diplomatic efforts.

Asike's professional journey through the U.S. Foreign Service has included diverse geographical and economic challenges. His overseas assignments have seen him acting as Chief of the Political and Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy in Luanda, Angola, and undertaking economic officer roles in both Dubai, UAE, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This wealth of international experience across continents will be a significant asset in Asike's efforts to foster and strengthen relationships within the ASEAN region.
