Why? To foster a lush environment for aquatic wildlife, especially bass, which apparently thrive where the greens grow. "Grass equals bass," Troy Thompson, a fisheries biologist with the Wildlife Resources Commission, spilled to Union County's news page. The plant choice isn't random; water willow stands up to local nuisances like carp and turtles, making it a durable option for the park's ecosystem needs.
Don't expect to see drastic changes overnight—nature, like a good bourbon, takes time. Nonetheless, the subsequent chapters of this restoration saga could be more noticeable to our local water roamers. Starting from 2026, the park will float in rooted greenery such as spatterdock and white water lily, creating protective enclosures in the shallows. Big thanks go to the under-the-radar backing by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Sport Fish Restoration Program, which throws a financial lifeline to conservation endeavors like this across North Carolina.
