The University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) have recently joined forces to launch an initiative aimed at bolstering the leadership skills of local school principals. This inaugural Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) convened for a three-day event focused on enhancing leadership capabilities with an eye toward improving educational outcomes across Cincinnati schools.

According to a report by the University of Cincinnati, discussions between CPS Superintendent Shauna Murphy and UC Enrollment Management officials led to the creation of the PLI. The event, part of the broader CPS Strong partnership, is a continuation of efforts to elevate student readiness and success through professional development for CPS's 66 principals.

"Last fall, Superintendent Shauna Murphy asked us to build out a leadership institute for all 66 elementary, middle/jr. high, and high school CPS principals," UC's Asst. Vice Provost Tara Stopfel Warden told the University of Cincinnati News. The initiative aims to equip school leaders with the tools and knowledge necessary to foster environments where both learning and management thrive.

Stressing the importance of the PLI, Superintendent Murphy reflected on her own experiences, "When I was a young principal, there were adults who poured into me, who helped me to sharpen my sword," she told the University of Cincinnati News. Murphy emphasized her desire to replicate those formative experiences for the current cohort of school leaders, underscoring the partnership's role in advancing educational leadership. The Principal Leadership Institute looks to be a cornerstone in CPS's strategy for enhancing the quality of its schools and the success of its students.
