With a vision to embrace and celebrate diversity, the University of Utah is gearing up for its first-ever Festival of Cultures on August 27. This day-long event, designed to bring together students, faculty, staff, and community members, promises to highlight the rich cultural mosaic on campus. Titled "Rooted & Rising: Many Roots, One U," the festival is all about connecting through diversity and fostering a sense of community at the U. According to At The U, the campus union will be alive with activity from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a variety of performances, music, and art on display.
The University's Center for Community & Cultural Engagement takes the helm in organizing this cultural fest. As told At The U, the director LeiLoni Allan-McLaughlin stated, "Our hope is to make this celebration a lasting tradition at the University of Utah, one that highlights the beautiful cultures and communities each student brings to campus." Welcoming everyone to learn and enjoy, the event includes dance performances, a showcasing of art and workshops, among other featured activities.
For those looking to explore worldwide flavors, the festival has lined up three food trucks, Chimichurri Grill, Kafe Mamai and Sergio’s Pizza, serving a range of international cuisines, located on the patio walkway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contributing to the day's activities, the I Am U Thriving visual storytelling campaign will be on display in the Union Ballroom East, allowing students to engage and share their narratives without needing to register in advance.
Moreover, the festival will include a unique cultural workshop entitled “My Name, My Story, My Culture, My Community," inviting participants into discussion circles to ask questions about culture, identity, and tradition. Recognizing the shared commitment to education as a unifying factor amid their diverse backgrounds, Allan-McLaughlin explained, "Our differences make our campus stronger, and together, we create a richer, more connected community," as obtained by At The U.
