As the Utah upland game and migratory game bird hunting season takes wing, both novice and seasoned hunters alike have ample opportunities to harvest a variety of species. With a Utah hunting license in hand, there's no need for additional permits for the majority of upland game, which includes several species of grouse, partridge, cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hares, and quail, according to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

For those with sights set on migratory birds, hunting opportunities abound for species such as doves and band-tailed pigeons. The Utah DWR's recent classification now distinguishes these birds in their own guidebook, providing hunters with essential permit information and updated field requirements. It's essential to plan, as some hunts for species like the dusky and ruffed grouse are ready to go with just a basic hunting license, while others, like the greater sage-grouse or band-tailed pigeon, require free permits that can be snagged online.

Dove enthusiasts will want to target agricultural fields or areas with water sources, where mourning and white-winged doves, protected under federal law, can often be found. "The weather in late August and early September can affect how many birds will be seen during the hunt," Upland Game Coordinator Heather Talley told Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Hunters take note: population trends this year vary by region, with some areas reporting lower numbers compared to previous years, so it's advisable to do some scouting pre-season.

While band-tailed pigeon numbers have been stable, Talley highlighted the birds' elusiveness, suggesting they could provide an "unique challenge" for hunters willing to traverse southern Utah's oak, aspen, and spruce/fir habitats. For grouse aficionados, the DWR emphasizes hunting in areas rich with berries, sagebrush, and grains, or amidst trees and shrubs bearing fruits and buds to increase your chances. Also, grouse diets shift seasonally, with dusky grouse migrating upslope and ruffed grouse foraging amongst the aspen.
