The University of Utah women's soccer team is gearing up for another competitive year as they announce their season opener against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, hoping to build on their solid performance from last season. According to UtahUtes.com, the match is slated for Thursday, Aug. 14, at 8 p.m. at Spokane's Luger Field.
With 12 new players bolstering the roster, Utah's team combines the zest of fresh talent with the solidity of returning seniors like Erin Gibbs in goal, and key players such as Devi Dudley, who led in minutes played last season. Despite facing Gonzaga on their turf, a team hungry for their eighth straight fall season with double-digit victories, the Utes are entering with a history of opening match success, having trumped Gonzaga just last year with a dramatic late goal from Bella Woods.
The Utes bring a rich blend of veterans and newbies this time around, with a seasoned senior class that includes stars like Kelly Bullock, earning an All-Big 12 Second-Team spot as a junior, and midfield maestro Lilliah Blum, the team's top returning scorer from the previous season. Fans should keep an eye on recruits like sophomore Alexa Malaspina and freshman Emeline McClenahan, who are set to compete for time guarding the nets.
On the academic side of things, Utah has set a precedent, leading the Big 12 with 79 newcomers earning Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team recognition. As the team preps for the field, Eliza Smith, Bella Ganiere, and Abby Affleck have also notched up achievements for their academic prowess. Nakada's squad this year will be captained by three graduate students in Devi Dudley, Grace Watkins, and Ava Hetzel, who boast a combined 204 collegiate games coming into this season.
The season opener is just the starting whistle for the Utes' 2025 agenda. They have their eyes firmly set on returning to NCAA Tournament glory for the first time since 2019, aiming to recreate the magic of their Sweet 16 run in 2016. With a schedule that sees them starting on the road again for the third time in four years, adaptability will be key for Hideki Nakada's outfit as they navigate through the upcoming Big 12 play.
