A 39-year-old Valley Springs man, Richard Alan Kessler III, was arrested for possessing firearms and ammunition after a Calaveras County Sheriff's deputy responded to a traffic hazard on the night of August 10. According to the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office's post, a citizen reported a sedan blocking South Railroad Flat Road at Wharregard Road, with the driver asleep at the wheel around 11 P.M.

Upon the deputy's arrival, Kessler, the driver, attempted to leave the scene before engaging with the officer. Two open alcoholic beverages were discovered in his car's cupholders. Kessler, who is currently on active, searchable probation, admitted to drinking and acknowledged that he should not have been behind the wheel. Investigation also disclosed that a Kessler was wanted for an unrelated case.

Officials detailed that a search of Kessler's vehicle unearthed a baggie containing approximately 3 grams of marijuana and two firearms—a loaded .38-caliber handgun in the center console and an unloaded .308-caliber rifle in the rear, with seven rounds attached to the stock. It was noted by the Sheriff's Office that Kessler is prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition.

Kessler was apprehended and faced multiple felony and misdemeanor charges at the county jail. Details of his charges have not been disclosed, but the possession of firearms and ammunition by a person with such legal prohibitions is typically treated with gravity by law enforcement.
