The City of Marysville is preparing to officially appoint Vance Nabeta as its new police chief, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Tuesday. Nabeta has been serving as interim chief since April, following the retirement of former chief Christian Sachs. Sachs retired after the death of Officer Osmar Rodarte, who was fatally shot while executing a search warrant as part of an operation targeting transnational drug trafficking.
Rodarte’s death on March 26 had a significant impact on the Marysville Police Department, prompting former Chief Christian Sachs to retire after stating the incident "shook me to my core," according to CBS News Sacramento. Nabeta, a veteran in law enforcement, began his career with the department in 1993. His background includes a wide range of experience in different areas of policing, including serving as a detective with the San Bruno Police Department.
In his statement on ascending to the permanent role of police chief, Nabeta said, "As Chief of Police, my goal is to serve our community with integrity, humility, and a commitment to excellence." Nabeta's statement, obtained by FOX40, he also highlighted his commitment to developing future leaders, helping to ensure a smooth continuation of the department’s mission by the next generation.
Nabeta’s connection to the role includes both his professional background and personal history with the city. "I grew up here—attending Kynoch and McKenney, graduating from Marysville High School—and my heart has always been with Marysville," he told FOX40. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place during the upcoming Marysville City Council meeting, marking a formal leadership transition for the police department.
