Almost one year to the date, Alyssa Pezzella's adoption story of Hera, a once heartworm-stricken pup, has turned into an everyday tale of joy in their household. Alyssa, an elementary school teacher, had been keeping tabs on the Wake County Animal Center's Instagram when the sight of Hera sparked an immediate connection. In a story reported by WakeGov, she said, “There was something about her,” continuing with the instant decision alongside her boyfriend that Hera was the one: “It’s just felt meant to be.”
Hera, after being welcomed into the household, faced a medical challenge, one that scores of dogs encounter each year: heartworms. Undeterred, Alyssa and her partner took it in stride. “Her foster mom explained it really well, and we did our research and learned it’s very treatable,” Alyssa told WakeGov. With sponsorship for the medical costs and a couple of months of treatment, Hera emerged heartworm-free. Now, Alyssa recounts, Hera is no longer an anxiety-riddled pooch but a contented, carefree part of the family.
Hera's transformation from anxious rescue to a beloved family member is not just an isolated event—it’s a beacon of hope illuminating the successes of pet adoption. Alyssa shares heartwarming accounts with her students, which has spun into a friendly narrative about Hera and another dog, Zeus, after which preschoolers are now playfully concocting marriage plots. “Now my students are obsessed. They keep saying Hera and Zeus should get married,” said Alyssa, according to the WakeGov feature. Reflecting on the affection and companionship Hera has provided, Alyssa spoke of the profound impact adopting a pet can have: “I knew dogs could brings love,” she said, “but I didn’t know it would feel like this.”
