Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a violent road rage incident that unfolded in early July. According to the Charles County Sheriff's Office, the event occurred on July 10, when a driver, who stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Billingsley Road and Middletown Road, became the target of gunfire from a passing motorcyclist. The assailant's shots shattered the car windows and inflicted minor injuries upon the victim. Detectives assigned to the case have identified and charged Robert Derek Simms, 36, of Waldorf, with the crime.
The aftermath of the shooting saw the victim quickly calling 9-1-1, leading to the arrival of officers at the scene. The victim reported an earlier altercation with the motorcycle driver, which soon escalated into the aggressive assault witnessed. In the efforts to thoroughly investigate, detectives were able to quickly develop Simms as a suspect. A critical search warrant, served on August 5 at Simms' residence, allowed officers to recover incriminating evidence, notably a handgun with a deliberately altered serial number, seemingly to obscure its origins.
The arrest of Simms casts a stark light on the dangerous intersections between road rage, gun violence, and the legal system's attempt to keep firearms out of the hands of those previously judged unfit to carry them. The fact that Simms was already prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior conviction suggests a cycle of violence that legal barriers alone are challenged to break. Upon his arrest, Simms faced several charges, including aggravated assault and weapons violations.
Last Thursday, the case saw Simms being ordered by a judge to be held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. Anxiety over road safety and gun control is likely to only be heightened by incidents such as these. Detective Gregory, the leading investigator on the case, has not yet publicly offered further insights into the ongoing proceedings.
