Two men from Washington, D.C., Vance McIlwain and Kenneth Johnson, both aged 32, were indicted on a series of charges related to a shooting incident that took place in November 2024. The indictment, which included assault with intent to kill while armed and other related charges, was handed down by a grand jury on Wednesday, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. The defendants were subsequently arraigned yesterday before Judge Jason Park.
As per details released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, McIlwain and Johnson are alleged to have plotted the shooting, which was caught on CCTV. The footage reportedly shows the two men in an apartment building, with Johnson seen passing a bag believed to contain a gun to McIlwain. Moments later, outside the building, McIlwain is said to have fired over 15 rounds at a victim who was seated on a front porch. A stray bullet reportedly entered a neighbor's home, while another was found on the porch. The U.S. Attorney's Office report describes how the duo is then claimed to have fled the scene, with Johnson taking refuge in an apartment where he was later arrested.
The consequences of their actions are severe, with each facing up to thirty years in prison if convicted of their charges. The shooting, which shook the southeast D.C. community, has resulted in a robust investigation led by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), with Chief Pamela Smith joining the announcement of the indictments. Both McIlwain and Johnson have remained in custody since their arrests.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Rudolf is presiding over the case's prosecution. In a statement regarding indictments, it is always important to remember that an individual's charge is merely an accusation. As the U.S. Attorney's Office emphasized, "all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law." The legal process must carefully unfold to thoroughly evaluate this presumption as McIlwain and Johnson prepare to face the consequences of the charges leveled against them.
