Last Thursday night, West Sacramento streets hosted a DUI checkpoint targeting impaired driving. The West Sacramento Police Department conducted the operation on Jefferson Blvd and Locks Dr from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., resulting in contact with 786 vehicles. According to a social media post, one DUI arrest was made during the checkpoint.
The checkpoint operations resulted in 14 citations issued and three vehicles towed. This initiative is based on the reality of impaired driving-related crashes in the area, with checkpoint locations strategically selected according to reported incidents to enhance public safety.
The primary purpose of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by identifying and removing potentially impaired drivers from the road. Organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) endorse DUI checkpoints as an effective means to discourage impaired driving. This particular checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
