A man entered the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on Friday evening, alleging to have seen a homicide in Riverview, shedding light on a case that would quickly span two counties. This incident led authorities to recover a body near the Weedon Island Preserve, off the Gandy Bridge in Pinellas County, and to a home on Maybrook Avenue which bore signs of a violent crime. The unfolding situation has pointed to crimes crossing jurisdictional lines, pulling together resources from multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to the official news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, detectives are now in the throes of the investigation, having sprung into action post-haste following the witness's report. The St. Petersburg Police were swiftly contacted to jointly handle the expanding crime scene. The identity of the deceased, as well as the circumstances leading to their demise, remain presently unidentified, awaiting the Medical Examiner's Office's determination.
The individual who brought the homicide to the attention of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is reportedly cooperating with the investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made in direct connection with the probe. It remains an active situation as investigators comb through the evidence and seek to piece together the events that led to this grim discovery.
"While our detectives continue to actively work this investigation, someone in our community knows what happened, and your information, no matter how small it may seem, could be the key to delivering justice for this victim and their family," Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said, according to their Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's press statement.
