A woman was shot and injured yesterday morning in a Brooklyn apartment building during a dispute with her downstairs neighbor, officials said. The incident occurred at around 8:45 a.m. at 399 St. John’s Place in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, where the 49-year-old victim was struck in the arm and leg. She was rapidly transported to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in a stable condition, as reported by ABC7NY.
After the shooting, the suspect, believed to quickly have fled the scene, was sought by police. A barricade situation was initially suspected, with police thinking the gunman might be holed up in his apartment. However, upon entering the unit, authorities found it empty. Described as about 5'10" tall and weighing 155 pounds, the man was last seen wearing a navy blue shirt and navy blue pants. Neighbors indicated that the woman had previously reported harassment issues with the man to the building's super. According to PIX11, 66-year-old David Nurse is the alleged shooter, with charges pending after he temporarily barricaded himself following the altercation.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene that unfolded in the apartment hallway. "There was just a bunch of yelling and screaming at the beginning, two or three seconds, then a gunshot, and then I wasn't even sure if it was a gunshot it was not that loud, a bunch of more screaming," one witness recounted in a statement obtained by ABC7NY. The witness continued, explaining their reaction to the sudden violence, "And then I poked my head out, and I heard the super say there was a gun go inside, so I went inside. I dressed myself, and then I went outside immediately on the street."
The investigation is currently ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the suspect. It's been reported that the dispute may have started when the woman called 911 over screaming coming from Nurse's apartment. This act seemingly escalated into a violent confrontation that ended with the woman being shot.
