In a move that marks a significant economic boost for Southwest Louisiana, Woodside Energy Group has finalized its investment plans for a new liquified natural gas (LNG) facility. The $17.5 billion Louisiana LNG project, located in Calcasieu Parish, is noted to be the largest single foreign direct investment in the state's history. This initiative is expected to output up to 16.5 million metric tons of LNG annually, as reported by the Opportunity Louisiana.
Governor Jeff Landry hailed the investment, stating, "Woodside’s decision to invest in Louisiana is an unmistakable signal to the world that Louisiana is the epicenter of powering the globe," as stated by the Opportunity Louisiana. He praised the state's energy policies and infrastructure, crediting them for the successful cultivation of such a significant project. The development will provide thousands of jobs during construction and even more once the facility is operational, translating to a substantial economic impact and substantial tax revenues for the region.
Woodside CEO, Meg O’Neill, expressed gratitude towards the support from state officials and the local community. "Louisiana LNG is a game-changing development for Woodside and for the state of Louisiana," O'Neill articulated in a statement embraced by the Opportunity Louisiana. This sentiment underlines the potential that such an investment holds for reviving the state's historic status as a key player in the energy sector.
The establishment of the Louisiana LNG facility is part of a broader picture of economic revitalization in the state, with projects like Meta’s AI data center and Hyundai Steel Company’s manufacturing facility contributing to this trend. LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois recognized how these efforts have poised Louisiana as a competitive player on the global stage: "Louisiana is in a new economic era, where our competitive advantages and comprehensive business ecosystem is generating transformational opportunities for Louisiana that have a global impact," Bourgeois stated, noting the significant role the LNG sector will play in this transformation. Construction is already underway with an anticipated commencement of operations targeted for 2029, according to the Opportunity Louisiana.
The project's local impact hasn't gone unnoticed, with Calcasieu Parish Police Jury President Judd Bares looking forward to the jobs and economic growth the facility is slated to bring. "This project will provide quality, well-paying jobs for the area and will also help to grow our local economy," Bares indicated in the same Opportunity Louisiana press release. Echoing this sentiment, Scott Walker, CEO of the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, praised Woodside for what he described as a "tremendous investment" that not only cements the region’s economic future but also promises clean energy for strategic allies worldwide.
