In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, a young Woodstock man lost his life in a drowning at Lake Chatuge. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the individual as 25-year-old Brek Lewis Green. According to the FOX 5 Atlanta report, Green was swimming on floats with a friend when the accident occurred around 4 a.m.
The friend, who has not been identified, reportedly tried to persuade Green to exit the water and return indoors. However, Green chose to remain behind. Upon the friend's return, they discovered Green was missing and immediately called for help. In a search that unfolded comprehensively over the morning hours, officials deployed sonar technology in a concerted effort to regrettably only confirm the worst.
Green's personal float was discovered at a dock across from the cove, suggesting that he may have attempted to swim to that location. It was around 11:45 a.m. when search teams, deploying SONAR, located Green's body in approximately 13 feet of water and roughly 40 feet from the dock, as reported by AccessWDUN.
It took until around noon for recovery efforts to conclude successfully, with involvement from the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and Towns County EMS. The body was then turned over to the Towns County Coroner, drawing a close to a search and rescue operation that had quickly transitioned to a recovery mission. The community and Green's loved ones are left to mourn a life taken unexpectedly and far too soon.
