
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has reported a series of fatal accidents on county dirt roads, highlighting the dangers of off-road driving under certain conditions. In a recent incident near West Sedona, deputies responded to a distress call regarding a UTV rollover; tragically resulting in the death of a 25-year-old male passenger who suffered serious head injuries after being ejected from the vehicle which had rolled down a ditch during a rainstorm on August 25, according to YCSO's official news release.
In another unfortunate event, YCSO deputies were dispatched to a UTV crash on Friday night, August 22, where a passenger was found pinned under the overturned vehicle after it rolled 50 feet down a ravine; the Sheriff's Office informed that the 49-year-old passenger passed away following an airlift to a Flagstaff hospital, the suspected driver was arrested on multiple charges including DUI after giving false information to the law enforcement, as detailed by YCSO's news release.
Earlier, on August 15, a single-vehicle crash on Cherry Creek Road saw a truck veering off and rolling down an embankment which led to the driver's immediate fatality at the scene; impairment was suspected to be a contributing factor in the accident, the Sheriff’s Office has emphasized the perils of intoxicated driving and how it plays a fatal role in off-road accidents, as stated in the YCSO press release.
In light of these tragedies, the Yavapai County Sheriff has decided to augment its off-road enforcement and patrols which include the deployment of new UTVs and an expanded Forest Patrol Unit. This comes on the heels of receiving a recent grant aimed to enhance traffic collision investigation capabilities. The Sheriff’s Office will persevere in their commitment to safety amid these challenges, as outlined in their online statement.
