An investigation is underway after a tragic traffic accident claimed the life of a young mother and left her two children in critical condition. The incident occurred yesterday in San Mateo at the intersection of Alameda de las Pulgas and Highway 92. According to the San Mateo Police Department, the collision involved a Ford SUV and a Toyota Prius, with the driver of the Prius being pronounced deceased on the scene.
The San Mateo Police, supported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), responded to the crash at approximately 6:17 PM. The female driver of the Prius, a 30-year-old, tragically lost her life, leaving behind her two young sons aged 5 and 7, who are now battling for their lives in a local hospital. In stark contrast, the male driver of the Ford SUV sustained only minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital. Authorities have confirmed that impairment was not a factor in the crash. The identity of the Ford driver has been withheld while the investigation continues.
The preliminary report suggests a severe oversight led to the accident. "The driver of the Ford did not stop for the red light and broad-sided the Prius," the San Mateo Police Department specified. Contrary to false reports, the family was not in an SUV, no SUV was hitting a light pole, and no car was reported going off the overpass. The true sequence of events is still being disentangled as authorities work to ascertain why the Ford's driver failed to stop at the signal.
The investigation required a temporary closure of transport arteries. The eastbound on-ramp and off-ramps for Highway 92, and Alameda de las Pulgas in both directions from W. 20th Ave to Barneson Ave were closed for around 4 hours. These roads, essential for commuter and local traffic alike, have been reopened since the accident site was cleared.
