A 10-year-old boy is recovering after his bicycle was struck by a Metra train near the New Lenox station, reported NBC Chicago. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Monday and caused train service disruptions along the Rock Island Line.
According to Metra spokespersons, the child was biking west of the New Lenox station when he was hit by the inbound train, though he himself was not struck, the boy's bicycle took the brunt of the collision. Service was temporarily suspended for roughly an hour and a half, impacting both inbound and outbound trains as authorities conducted their investigation. WGN-TV noted that the child was transported to Silver Cross Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The surrounding circumstances of the collision are still under investigation. However, local transit authorities are now examining safety measures in the area to prevent future incidents. Commuters faced delays, but train services have since returned to their usual schedule following the incident.
Details remain sparse; however, the boy's current condition has not been publicly shared since his admission to the hospital.
