In a turn of events in the Bronx last month, a second individual has succumbed to wounds suffered during a basketball game shooting at Haffen Park. Anthonaya Campbell, 17, who was shot in the face while watching the game, passed away on August 29, said the New York Police Department. Her untimely death follows the immediate fatality of 32-year-old Jaceil Banks, who was shot in the chest during the same incident, as reported by ABC7 New York.
The shooting, which also injured three others, has been linked to gang activity. Four individuals, including two minors, have been charged with murder and several other crimes in connection with the August 23 shooting. A Facebook post shared the community's response to the incident: "This young girl['s] life mattered and she should be here still with us! Her life was sadly taking [sic] away from us due to another senseless shooting," wrote Boyde Yeremiyah of Alpha & Omega Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ Inc., as noted by the New York Post.
Jennifer Talbot, Campbell's mother, reminisced about her daughter's vibrant spirit, highlighting her passion for helping others. "She's a joyful person," Talbot said in a statement to the New York Post, "When you look at her, you just smile. She loves everybody. She greets everybody. She reaches out to everybody."
Amid ongoing investigations, another shooting occurred in the Bronx last week. In what authorities described as a gang-related drive-by, one man was killed and four others were injured. According to the New York Post, charges against Daeven Reyes, 20; Robert Royal, 25; and two teenage suspects may be upgraded following the death of Campbell.
