A fatal car crash in southeast Austin on Labor Day has led to the arrest of 21-year-old Sonia Ramos on charges of intoxication manslaughter. As reported by CBS Austin, the incident occurred at around 9:46 p.m. on Monday, with police responding to the scene at the 5200 block of East Ben White Boulevard in the eastbound lanes. Tragically, the passenger of the vehicle Ramos was driving, 21-year-old Sheyla Alejandra Mascorro, was pronounced dead at the scene.
This recent crash stands as Austin's 71st fatal collision of the year, pushing the death toll to 75—a stark rise from the 59 fatal crashes that resulted in 64 deaths at the same point in time last year. In a detail secured by FOX 7 Austin, Ramos admitted to officers that she inadvertently rear-ended another vehicle when she switched to the left lane while Mascorro was dancing with part of her body out of the window.
The Austin Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and is gathering further information. Those with any insight into the incident are encouraged to get in touch with APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit directly, or to provide anonymous tips via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
As the community grapples with the consequences of impaired driving, the loss of Sheyla Alejandra Mascorro serves as a somber reminder of the potential perils of such actions behind the wheel. It remains imperative that drivers understand the gravitas of their responsibility every time they take to the roads, to ensure their safety and the safety of others sharing the asphalt paths that criss-cross our everyday lives.
