A tragic incident in Volusia County on Monday morning has taken the life of a 22-year-old tree service employee who was fatally struck by a falling tree trunk. As reported by ClickOrlando, the accident occurred on George Ryan Road in DeLand around 9:40 a.m. during a routine tree trimming operation.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office detailed that the victim and his coworker were actively engaged in cutting trees when the coworker, stationed in a bucket truck wielding a chainsaw, verbally indicated his intent to commence cutting after verifying the clearance of the terrain below declaring the area below was clear, as he prepared to cut, the accident happened leaving the community to grapple with the sudden loss. The victim, positioned away near an adjacent truck momentarily prior, re-entered the fall zone underneath the coworker and was subsequently struck by the tree segment.
Following the incident, the coworker immediately contacted emergency services and administered first aid in an attempt to save the young worker's life, but despite these efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to information from a WFTV report.
