From September 19 to 25, 511 people were charged with immigration-related offenses in South Texas, including illegal reentry, illegal entry, and human smuggling. Among them, 180 people with previous felonies were charged with illegal reentry, 304 with illegal entry, and 16 with human smuggling. Two Mexican nationals, Juan Carmen Padron Mendez and Juan Carlos Padron Barron, could face up to 20 years for assaulting a Border Patrol agent. Sindi Moreno-Flores is accused of resisting and scratching an ICE officer during an arrest, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Brandon Lajohn Hargrove and Jose Luis Castellanos-Hercules are accused of transporting 55 people in a produce trailer with a hidden compartment, where the passengers had to crawl through a small door to escape after pallets blocked the exit. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting illegal immigration and cartels. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is working with federal, state, and local law enforcement on this and other federal cases.
Erik Villegas Cusi, a Mexican resident, pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle fentanyl and cocaine by hiding the drugs in his vehicle’s undercarriage while crossing an international bridge with family.
