Tragedy struck a Brooklyn nursing home when an 89-year-old woman was beaten to death with a piece of metal from her wheelchair, reportedly wielded by a fellow resident age 95. PIX11 sources indicate that the incident occurred at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center late Sunday night. NYPD officers arrived at the scene to discover the victim with severe head injuries.
According to the authorities, the suspect is Galina Smirnova, who allegedly got into a fight with the victim before using the wheelchair's metal piece as a weapon. The unidentified woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition but ultimately could not survive her injuries. Smirnova, who has been reported to have dementia, was taken into custody, though it remains unclear if she will face charges. The nature of the dispute has not been made public.
Over at The New York Post, additional details emerged. Following the altercation, the 95-year-old was sent to Coney Island Hospital for both a physical and psychiatric evaluation. Officials have not yet charged her, considering her age and her mental condition.
The aftermath of the violent incident left residents and visitors of the Seagate facility shaken. "I’m a nervous wreck for my sister," a 77-year-old visitor, who identified herself as Elaine, said in a statement obtained by the New York Post. "That could’ve been my sister," she added, expressing her distress over the potential danger her sibling could have faced in the facility.
The sad event has raised questions about safety and the care for those with dementia in similar facilities. With police investigations still ongoing, residents of the nursing home and their families are left grappling with the shocking reality that what should be a safe haven for the elderly can turn into a scene of unspeakable violence.
