Activists were on the scene outside the Broadview ICE facility early Friday morning, demonstrating against the federal immigration enforcement operation known as "Operation: Midway Blitz." As the sun rose over suburban Chicago, the group was already facing law enforcement as they actively tried to disrupt the operation initiated by the Department of Homeland Security. According to WGN-TV, a confrontation occurred early in the day when agents, camouflaged and masked, removed some of a protesters obstructing the driveway to the facility.

Intended to last 12 hours, the protest began even before its scheduled 7 a.m. start, attracting the attention of not just activists but also local faith leaders and community members who stood against what they perceived as an aggressive stance by federal officials. Operation Midway Blitz, which is set to last for a month and a half, allegedly targets undocumented individuals with criminal records. However, ABC7 Chicago reports that local immigration rights leaders have observed an uptick in calls for legal assistance, indicating heightened activity by ICE agents in the area.

Last week, protesters managed to turn away an ICE vehicle at the same facility, signaling an escalation in the tension between activists and federal immigration enforcement. This facility has become a focal point for advocates since the Broadview mayor confirmed its role as the main processing center for the operation. Amid this backdrop, a hotline managed by the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant & Refugee Rights has seen a surge in call volume. Lawrence Benito from the coalition conveyed to ABC7 Chicago that "Hotline call volume has been higher than at any point since January," indicating persistent ICE presence in the region.

With the focus now shared between the ongoing protests and the upcoming Mexican Independence Day Parade in Little Village, organizers are not only readying for the weekend's festivities but also preparing rapid response teams and attorneys to assist the community. Information sessions have already been held informing residents of their rights and available resources as many families remain on edge with the increased ICE activity. The parade is set to take place Sunday at noon in Little Village, with immigrant rights groups and community leaders showing solidarity in the face of DHS's stated mission to apprehend undocumented immigrants with criminal records in Chicago.
