In a concerted effort to improve pedestrian safety, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has implemented new infrastructure enhancements on State Route 73, as reported by AZDOT. The project, which came to a close with a price tag of $1.75 million, has introduced sidewalks, lighting, and additional safety features to the stretch of road near the White Mountain Apache Reservation, particularly near the junction with State Route 260.

Backing this initiative, the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program provided the necessary funds, focusing on its mission to cut down on traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. On both sides of SR 73, the project has seen the installation of 1,824 feet of sidewalks and nine light fixtures, attempting to serve the Indian Pine community's pedestrians, six miles southeast of Pinetop-Lakeside, in collaboration with the tribal government, according to AZDOT.

The area encompasses the Hon-Dah Casino Resort Hotel and the Hon-Dah RV Park. The project was funded through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program, which is aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries. In Arizona, these funds are applied in accordance with the Strategic Highway Safety Plan, updated every five years by AZDOT in coordination with partner agencies.
