The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has just hit a significant milestone with the Interstate 40 and US 93 interchange construction in Kingman, reaching the halfway point on a $106 million project. Aimed to make travel between Las Vegas and Arizona smoother and more efficient, the project was marked 15 months into construction, introducing a free-flowing traffic system to minimize delays. According to ADOT, this will eliminate the need for traffic to stop for a signal at Beale Street at I-40 by adding one mile of new ramps.
Among the visible strides made, new structures have started to take shape, including part of a bridge over Clack Canyon that will carry traffic from southbound US 93 onto eastbound I-40. ADOT's efforts also include carving out tunnels along US 93, which will eventually lead traffic to pass above Beale Street and Fort Beale Drive. The progress to swiftly connect these two vital roadways has not come without its challenges, particularly with the introduction of nighttime work and roadway closures, as per ADOT.
Currently, construction crews are tackling extensive earthwork throughout the site, ranging from excavation to embankment fortification, where new ramps will link I-40 and US 93. Additionally, sound walls have been rising on I-40's westbound side between Stockton Hill and White Cliffs roads, aiming to mitigate noise pollution resulting from the increased traffic flow. The project design promises to accommodate the anticipated traffic growth for the next 25 years.
Drivers should anticipate extensive construction activity, including both daytime and nighttime work. US 93 will have nighttime closures for rock blasting, limited to 8–9 p.m. on weeknights to reduce disruption. ADOT reported, most lane restrictions will take place during off-peak hours, with two lanes in each direction kept open during peak times. Businesses, Route 66, and downtown Kingman will remain accessible via Beale Street exits on both US 93 and I-40. ADOT also noted progress on a new bridge that will connect southbound US 93 to eastbound I-40.
