lvin Alexis Cruz Garcia has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2021 beating death of Ramon Gomez Yanez in Northwest D.C. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro following a guilty verdict for second-degree murder while armed, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
On the evening of March 23, 2021, 38-year-old Ramon Gomez Yanez exited Ogden Market around 8:28 p.m. and saw Cruz Garcia urinating near his parked car. A verbal exchange followed, captured without audio by the store’s surveillance camera. The situation quickly escalated when Cruz Garcia knocked Gomez Yanez to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched him in the head. Cruz Garcia then left the scene, leaving Gomez Yanez with injuries that later proved fatal.
The surveillance footage became a key piece of evidence in the trial and was described in the official announcement. Cruz Garcia was arrested more than a year later, on June 7, 2022, and has remained in custody since.
The conviction and sentencing of Cruz Garcia followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department, with Chief Pamela Smith commending the team for their work. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jin Park and Katrenia Shelly were recognized for their roles in prosecuting the case.
