Responding to widespread concerns over health insurance claim denials, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is taking action by scheduling a series of town halls to hear directly from the impacted patients and healthcare providers. "From the stories that Arizonans have shared with the public, we are concerned that some health insurance companies may be participating in potentially unlawful practices," Mayes stated as per Arizona Attorney General's Office. These town halls serve as a platform for individuals to voice their experiences with claim denials which have led to considerable out-of-pocket costs or the complete absence of care.

A report by the Attorney General's office highlighted that health insurance companies, on average, denied 19% of in-network claims filed, with Arizona specifically seeing a denial rate of 21%. The consequences of these denials are striking – patients are forced to pay these costs from their own pockets or simply go without the medical attention they critically need. As the Attorney General mentioned, "When claims are denied, Arizonans either go without the care they need, or they suffer under exorbitant out of pocket costs." This disturbing trend echoes across the state, where around 460,000 adults, or 8.2%, are grappling with medical debt despite being insured.

The public, including health care providers, patients, and loved ones, are invited to join the first of these meetings on September 15, 2025. The town hall, which aims to address these insurance concerns and find ways forward, will be held in Gilbert at the Maricopa County Southwest Regional Library. For those interested in participating, details are available, and RSVPs can be made through the Attorney General's website.

These listening sessions may be the first step toward uncovering and potentially rectifying the unjust practices of health insurance companies within the state. Mayes is clear in her commitment to the people of Arizona – ensuring that the high denial rates and their subsequent effects don't go unnoticed. In her own words, "I'm inviting Arizona health care providers, patients, and their loved ones to join us and share their experiences," as mentioned on the Arizona Attorney General's Office website.
