In a move to better align fees with the actual cost of services, Arlington's Planning and Development Services Department has announced a phased update to its permitting fee structure, a first since 2008. The adjustment aims to cover the real costs incurred by the city and comply with the latest state regulations. It's been a long time coming, with previous fee changes merely a response to specific legislative, ordinance, or organizational shifts, leaving many fees outdated and not reflective of current service costs, as per the City of Arlington.

Commencing on July 15, Phase I of the update, as approved by the Arlington City Council on June 24, will see a revised fee schedule encompassing a range of permits and services. These include adjustments to platting, zoning, and sign permit costs, special event parking, temporary outdoor and special events, as well as trade permits, which are set to cover various inspections for systems such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and irrigation. It doesn't stop there. The cost for Board and Commission and special staff meetings associated with permitting applications, gas well drilling, and health permits are on the list too.

Well ahead of the second phase, updates to certain Health Services permitting activities are poised to take effect on September 1. This follows the need to fall in step with new state legislation. The September deadline affords businesses and individuals a narrow window to prepare for the adjustments. Phase I and Health Fees will seamlessly integrate into the existing fee schedule.

Preceding Phase II will feature its own set of changes, starting October 1. The Arlington City Council gave the nod to this next step on September 16, detailing tweaks to fees related to both residential and commercial construction, including building permits, plan reviews, and Certificates of Occupancy. This round will also revise fees for sign permits and inspections, along with additional zoning revisions.
