The City of Arlington is stepping up efforts to help residents navigate the streets safely after dark, with a particular focus on those who walk and cycle. As we move into the time of year when night falls earlier, the Office of Communication has issued guidance aimed at preventing unfortunate incidents that can happen when visibility dwindles.
For those on foot, the city stresses the importance of standing out. "Be Bright: Wear light-colored clothing or, even better, reflective materials. A reflective vest or jacket is a great investment," the City of Arlington advises. Proper illumination is also key; walkers should carry a small flashlight or headlamp to ensure they can see and be seen by nearby traffic. Despite distractions being more prevalent than ever, the city warns against the use of cell phones and headphones, which can impair one's ability to stay alert.
According to the City of Arlington, a critical safety tip for pedestrians involves crossing streets wisely. "Cross Smart: Cross streets at designated crosswalks and intersections. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road to ensure they see you," states the city’s guidance. By doing so, walkers can minimize the risk of accidents in areas where visibility for drivers may be less than ideal.
Cyclists are not left out of the city's night safety strategy, as the use of lights and reflective tape is highly recommended to enhance visibility. When taking to the streets, riders are advised to ensure that they "Light Up Your Ride: State law or best practices often require a white front light and a red rear light. A front light with at least 600 lumens is recommended for seeing and being seen." As for cyclists, predictable and lawful behavior is just as important as it is for pedestrians. "Follow Traffic Laws: Obey all traffic signals, stop signs, and lane markings. Ride with the flow of traffic," the City of Arlington advises.
