In a collaborative move seemingly straight out of a crime procedural, the Arlington Police Department (APD) has joined forces with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) to crack old homicide cases that have grown cold. They've launched a cutting-edge program, taking academia out of theoretical musings and placing it squarely in the trenches of mysteries. According to the Arlington's News Articles, this initiative, which began in the fall semester of 2025, invites students to put their textbooks aside and engage with the gritty realities of cold case investigations.
To bring this partnership to life, Pat Eddings, Senior Lecturer at UTA's Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice and former forensic analyst, after presenting last year to UTA students, had an interaction with APD's Homicide Sergeant Blake Ritchie, sparking the idea. The APD didn't hesitate to roll with the educational alliance, moving quickly from concept to reality. Under a signed memorandum of understanding, 15 students studying criminal justice and forensics were handpicked to breathe new life into three dormant APD homicide investigations.
The undertaking is rooted deeply in mutual benefit; the police force gains extra manpower and a fresh perspective, while the students receive an unmatched practical learning opportunity. Assistant Chief Kyle Dishko, overseeing the APD Criminal Investigations Bureau, emphasized the value of this synergy, telling Arlington's News Articles, "This is truly a win-win." Every unsolved case is like an intricate puzzle waiting for the right minds to piece it together, and Dishko sees these students as harboring the potential to draw new connections and spark breakthroughs that seasoned detectives might have overlooked.
