In an effort announced last month, a specialized van bearing LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) gear will be scanning pavements across the city, bringing the city's goals for a comprehensive Sidewalk Master Plan closer to reaching. The LiDAR technology is set to measure and whip up detailed 3D maps, taking stock of the state of urban walkways.
According to the Arlington Public Works Department, this endeavor is kicking off in the southwest corner of Arlington on August 12 and aims to wrap up in about six weeks. The data harvested by this high-resolution peek at the city's sidewalks will feed initiatives to meet ADA accessibility standards and pinpoint spots in need of repair or total overhaul. Noteworthy, is that this project falls under a broader canvas to amp up accessibility and pedestrian mobility in Arlington.
