The Armuchee High School community is mourning the tragic loss of 15-year-old football player David Clemons, who died following a vehicular crash, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Clemons was a passenger in a red pickup truck being driven by a 16-year-old teammate, and they were returning home from a football practice when their vehicle attempted to make a left turn on Calhoun Road, near Georgia Loop 1, and collided with a beige pickup truck around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
The aftermath of the collision sent Clemons and two other individuals to Atrium Health Floyd Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while the condition of the others involved was not immediately released; authorities are looking into whether charges will be filed against anyone involved in the accident the community response has been one of collective grief and remembrance for the young Armuchee "Tribe" member. 11Alive notes that the driver of the red pickup, like Clemons a juvenile, was taken to Atrium Floyd Medical Center, though the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Students and teammates, reeling from the loss, gathered at the crash site the following day to construct a temporary memorial and share their memories of Clemons, embracing the spirit of friendship and community that he exemplified. "He was always energetic, happy. He was the kind of guy who always had a smile on his face," teammate Carter Nash told FOX 5 Atlanta, a sentiment echoed by others who knew him.
The principle of Armuchee High expressed the school's collective heartache, affirming that "Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our beloved Tribe — a student, teammate, and friend who touched so many lives; we stand together offering strength and compassion," in a statement, while on the Armuchee High School Facebook page, a post extended "our deepest love and heartfelt condolences to the family during this unimaginable time" and emphasized the unity of their community during this difficult period.
