Robert Aaron Long, the man convicted in the 2021 Atlanta area spa shootings that resulted in eight deaths, faces a new round of hearings this week. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Long, who is already serving multiple life sentences for the crimes committed in Cherokee County, will confront charges in Fulton County, including felony murder and domestic terrorism.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is seeking the death penalty, citing the state's hate crimes statute as the killings primarily targeted women of Asian descent. The approach to prosecuting under hate crime provisions is emblematic of a broader dialogue on race and hostility toward Asian Americans. This focus comes at a time when the nation grapples with a marked increase in violence against Asian American communities, as detailed in an Atlanta News First report.
Long's defense, in an ongoing effort to challenge the legal process, has filed motions that question the constitutionality of Georgia’s lethal injection law. Previously, Long's attorneys attempted, but failed, to prevent his admissions of guilt after his arrest from being used against him in court. The upcoming hearings will also address these pending motions.
Chief Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville, known for presiding over high-profile cases, will oversee the proceedings. Long's actions on the day of the murders began with purchasing a gun and concluded with a series of deadly attacks that spread fear across the Atlanta area and beyond.
