Residents of Atlantic Beach have been pressing the City for answers and action regarding the pungent odors emanating from the local Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). The City has responded with a series of updates describing their targeted interventions to address the issue, prioritizing air quality and community wellbeing.

In an update posted yesterday, the City outlined recent actions taken at the WWTF, such as the removal of accumulated solids last Saturday, and consulting with environmental firms for long-term solutions. The City emphasized their "commitment to both maintaining current operations and proactively addressing future challenges at the wastewater treatment plant" in the City of Atlantic Beach's statement. The report also details plans to repair the BioAir unit critical in treating air and reducing odors, and explores the use of a masking agent to help neutralize or cover up odors.

Efforts to mitigate the stench began with the repositioning of equipment on September 12, along with using lime to cover the drying bed and consulting JEA on best practices, according to the City of Atlantic Beach's previous update. The City is combining immediate corrective actions with strategic, long-term projects in an attempt to combat the odors.

Earlier interventions, detailed in the September 8 update, addressed relocating sludge and debris management areas and targeted tank pumping. The latter included pumping approximately 70,000 gallons of wastewater from a specific tank as well as a sump tank that contained odorous solids. The City of Atlantic Beach also laid out its ongoing initiatives, which include Bio-Air unit maintenance, Davco tank cleaning, and the solicitation of quotes for fencing designed to function as a wind barrier to control odors.

The sequence of reports highlights an incremental approach the City is taking to curb the unpleasant smells that have ruffled the feathers of Atlantic Beach inhabitants. The updates provide a transparent look into the numerous steps the local government is enacting while maintaining an active dialogue with the community.
