A person was injured in a shooting near Norwood Avenue and Crestwood Street in Jacksonville early Monday morning, and detectives spent hours afterward canvassing the area for surveillance footage and witnesses. The victim received treatment for injuries, and investigators recovered shell casings at the scene as the crime scene remained active into the morning.
Officers responded to a report of a person shot near the intersection, according to News4JAX. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it appears the shooting was an isolated incident, and investigators do not believe it was gang-related or domestic-related, though the suspect's identity has not been determined. JSO Robbery and Violent Crime Unit detectives interviewed witnesses and followed up on investigative leads at the scene.
Detectives Comb Neighborhood for Clues
Detectives canvassed nearby residences and businesses for signs of gunfire damage and for any surveillance video that might help identify a suspect, per the same account. The JSO Crime Scene Unit processed evidence from the shooting scene, and detectives planned to continue working in the area for several hours. Investigators are also looking into whether the victim and suspect knew each other, a question that remains unresolved.
The corner of Norwood Avenue and Crestwood Street sits within JSO's Zone 1, just blocks from the department's District 1 substation at 5258 Norwood Avenue. Despite that police presence, the intersection has a documented history of gun violence stretching back years.
A Corner With a Violent Past
In February, four teenagers were arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on charges of armed robbery and attempted murder after an exchange of gunfire at the same intersection, according to JSO, which said a driver sitting in his car returned fire after being confronted by the armed teens. Years earlier, in June 2020, a 39-year-old woman was shot in the face at a convenience store gas station at that same corner, with investigators recovering bullet casings from a park across the street, as reported by News4JAX.
Violence has also touched the broader Norwood Avenue corridor more recently. In June 2025, a man in his 20s died after being shot following an argument outside Elevation Lounge on Norwood Avenue, a case Hoodline previously reported. Hoodline has also covered a deadly shooting and arrest in the nearby Norwood neighborhood this year, along with other recent Northside gun violence, including a fatal accidental shooting involving a toddler and a non-fatal teen shooting, both reported in the last two weeks.
Citywide Homicides Down, But Hotspots Persist
The Monday shooting comes even as Jacksonville has seen a sharp citywide drop in homicides this year. JSO data reported by News4JAX showed 27 homicides through midyear 2026, nearly half of the 48 recorded by the same point in 2025. Sheriff T.K. Waters attributed the decline to targeted community response and group violence intervention strategies, the station noted.
According to JSO's open data portal, Jacksonville had recorded 38 murders and 43 total homicides in 2026 through late August, with a 60.47 percent clearance rate. Jacksonville logged 97 total homicides in 2025, and Waters has noted that only one of those was gang- or group-affiliated, per News4JAX's reporting on the department's year-end data. City programs such as the RISE initiative, which works with JSO's gang unit to identify at-risk youth and conduct direct outreach, have been credited by officials as a driver behind this year's decline.
