On a late Saturday night in September, the Austin Police Department quickly responded to a burglary in progress, as reported by out-of-town visitors staying in an Airbnb on West 21st Street. In the wake of their return to the rental, the guests found intruders in the act of pilfering their possessions, leading to a citywide search that resulted in four arrests.
The initial break-in sparked a sequence of events that allowed the victims to successfully track a stolen item to a location on the same block. However, despite locating the suspect vehicle, police officers found the suspects absent and thus had it towed. It was a reappearance that tipped off neighbors, who didn't hesitate to alert the authorities. Upon return, officers were able to quickly detain two of the burglary suspects and another individual who appeared to have shown up to transport them away from the scene.
According to a statement released by the Austin Police Department, the situation rapidly escalated when officers, while processing the suspects, were alerted to a possible overdose victim within the residence. Their welfare check uncovered a woman in and out of consciousness who claimed to have been sexually assaulted and drugged. She was immediately attended to by emergency services and transported to the hospital.
As the investigation continued to unfold within the residence, officers had to vacate the premises when they stumbled upon what appeared to be an illegal drug manufacturing setup. Items observed suggested drug production, alongside materials that supported the female victim's alarming allegations. The resident of the apartment arrived later, only to be detained as part of the widening probe, which now involved APD's sex crime and narcotics units, as well as the Clandestine Lab Team of the DEA Task Force.
The four individuals facing legal repercussions from the night's events are Octavius Jackson, Latasha Fletcher, Calvin Guyton, and James Sailors. Their charges range from possession of a controlled substance to burglary, and from unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon to manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. The APD highlighted the importance of collaboration across multiple units, which was instrumental in apprehending the suspects and ensuring the safety of the victim.
