In a dramatic turn of events at Paycor Stadium, the Cincinnati Bengals clinched a last-minute victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a final score of 31-27. Backup quarterback Jake Browning stepped in to deliver the Bengals their second win of the season, following an injury to starting QB Joe Burrow, according to WLWT. Burrow sustained a broken toe injury, which took him out of the game in the second quarter.
Despite trailing for the majority of the game, Browning led a 92-yard game-winning drive, diving over the goal line with just 18 seconds left on the clock. This feat was highlighted by a crucial defensive pass interference penalty against Jacksonville rookie Travis Hunter. As conveyed by LOCAL12, the penalty occurred when Hunter interfered with a pass intended for Cincinnati receiver Andrei Iosivas on a fourth and five. The successful drive was a reflection of the team's resilience, with Bengals' head coach Zac Taylor commenting, “Its a resilient group that found a way," as WLWT reported.
Completing the game with 241 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, Browning ended 21-for-32 in passing, according to stats provided by The Enquirer. The Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence was not without merit himself, throwing 24-for-42 for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Nonetheless, the Bengals' defense managed to intercept Lawrence twice and put up late stops that contributed to their win.
Before Burrow's exit in the second quarter, he had completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 76 yards and a touchdown. "There’s not a second where anyone flinched," Taylor conveyed the team's reaction to the franchise player's injury in a statement obtained by WLWT. The Bengals now sit at a 2-0 start to the season, marking the first time they have done so since 2018.
Jacksonville had initially set an assertive pace, leading with an early touchdown and briefly commanding the game. Cincinnati, however, managed to keep the scoreline in check, benefiting from a pair of interceptions and competent offensive plays. As recapitulated by LOCAL12, key moments such as Dax Hill's interception and Ja'Marr Chase's milestone 400th career catch helped keep the Bengals afloat before Browning's late-game heroics sealed the win.
