The landscape of Baltimore County politics is gearing up for a shift as Councilman Izzy Patoka throws his hat into the ring for the county executive spot. During a Monday backyard bash at his Pikesville residence, Patoka made his aspirations official among friends and noteworthy endorsers, as reported by Fox Baltimore. The occasion was peppered with support, not least from former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and Baltimore City Councilman Isaac "Yitzy" Schleifer.
According to WYPR, Patoka emphasized his record on the county council, citing achievements like plastic bag bans and efforts to alleviate school overcrowding. He is not the only council member vying for the seat; his competitors for the 2026 Democratic nomination include council peers Julian Jones and Pat Young.
Highlighting his commitment to effective government, Patoka also has been a proponent for the inspector general's office, which oversees fraud, waste, and abuse in the county, according to Fox Baltimore. He told them that one of his agenda items will be to "takes the politics of the appointment or reappointment of an inspector general," referencing his legislative efforts to establish a more independent board for the position.
While the Democratic field is crowded, the Republicans have yet to put forward a candidate. Meanwhile, Patoka and Jones have each amassed over $1 million in campaign funds, with Stewart trailing at about $150,000.
