A California State University, Bakersfield basketball coach has been ensnared by the law on a slew of charges, including sex trafficking a minor, after a cooperative effort between Bakersfield and Sacramento police departments. Kern County prosecutors have charged Kevin Sanford Mays Jr., 32, with felonies that encompass pandering a minor for prostitution purposes, pimping, and possession of both drugs and illegal firearms, as per The Sacramento Bee.
Details provided by FOX40 relay that the investigation was propelled forward when Bakersfield officers received an anonymous tip-off suggesting a woman was being trafficked through multiple states, the alleged activities reaching across California, Oregon, and Washington, with Mays apparently seen in the driving seat when it comes to culpability. The Bakersfield Police Department linked a car used by the trafficking victim to Mays and, in collaboration with the Sacramento Police Department's Human Trafficking Units, located the victim in Sacramento, who confirmed Mays as her trafficker, pushing the law's hand to cuff the coach last Thursday.
The aforementioned charges against Mays include the pandering of a minor over the age of 16, illegal drug possession while armed, and maintaining an arsenal inclusive of an assault rifle and a short-barreled shotgun, which Kern Superior Court records confirm. These serious allegations find their roots in an intensive planning and exploitation of a particularly vulnerable victim, says the Kern County District Attorney's Office, amplifying the gravity of the crimes. The Sacramento Bee cites that Mays' arraignment occurred yesterday afternoon, a presumably stark contrast from his usual court side hustle.
Addition to the felony charges, according to the information provided by The Sacramento Bee, Mays faces five misdemeanor offenses ranging from carrying concealed weapons in a vehicle to illegal marijuana sales, each charge etching a deeper notch on the legal battlement he now faces.
