A Bellevue man, after threatening to kill his attorney, as well as the presiding judge, and prosecutors involved in his criminal case, has been sentenced to a decade in prison. According to the Ohio Attorney General's office, 49-year-old Eric Braun's sentence was handed down following his conviction on charges stemming from a road rage incident and subsequent threats made during the legal proceedings.
Reported by FOX19, Braun was initially arrested for improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and aggravated menacing, related to an event occurring in February 2023. As the case unfolded, threats were made against the legal professionals tasked with upholding the law in his case, an action that has led to a stern response from the justice system. "You can’t threaten lawyers and judges and not expect there to be consequences," Attorney General Dave Yost said, a sentiment he expressed in a statement, and later reiterated by cleveland.com.
Braun faced a jury that found him guilty on June 13, convicting him of four counts of intimidation against the legal professionals assigned to his case and one count of aggravated menacing. The case not only highlighted the violent threats Braun posed to individuals but also underscored the intimidation tactics that assail the very fabric of the legal process.
Further detail from WKYC reveals that the Ohio State Highway Patrol was responsible for investigating the initial road rage incident that set this series of events into motion. The intimidation threats, thereafter, were investigated by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by the Special Prosecutions Section of Yost's office. The attorney general's remarks serve as a clear reminder of the repercussions that come from obstructing justice, "A decade behind bars will give this defendant ample time to think before he speaks," Yost told WKYC.
